Fixed Track Lifelines Have A Longer Life Than Cable Lifelines

Fixed track lifelines installation is one of FallProof’s many strengths in providing vertical fall arrest systems to companies nationwide. Rigid fixed-track lifeline is used on building spires and other difficult or impossible to replace locations as they are more durable than cable-based ladder climbing systems. An added benefit is that a rigid system can accommodate more workers, which is important on very tall structures. In these systems, a shuttle, or braking mechanism, moves up and down inside the channel, while being attached to the worker’s front D-ring to provide continuous fall protection. In the event of a slip, the worker’s downward momentum is stopped in a matter of inches, and rescue is a matter of simply stepping back onto the nearest rung.

As the premier fall protection specialty contractor in the New York Metropolitan area, FallProof was selected to supervise and certify the installation of a 408-foot tall fall protection system. The ladders are both internal and external, and allow maintenance workers, electricians and others access. The simple and low profile rail design allows for years of minimal maintenance. Each section of the rail mates perfectly via two internal stainless steel pins, creating quick and smooth connections.

The vertical aluminum rigid rail was assembled and mounted to the ladders in sections on the ground in a construction yard in New Jersey. FallProof worked closely with both the erection contractor and members of the local Ironworkers Union to ensure that every component of the system was assembled according to the manufacturer’s specifications. The integrated spire units were lifted by crane and connected atop the building to complete the spire. Once the system was fully operational on site, FallProof certified the installation to the manufacturer and to the Port Authority.

FallProof also supervised and certified the installation of 360 feet of low profile track by Rigid Lifelines on each of the three steel platform levels rings on the rooftop at the base of the antenna, which were specially designed systems on this project. Each ring track is rated for four users, and each track system is fully round, allowing for a continuous run all the way around with no disconnection at any point.
